ReCode Cherokee|Project Background
Back to ReCode CherokeeCherokee County’s existing Zoning Ordinance was adopted in 1992 and the current Development Regulations were adopted in 1998. These regulations have undergone numerous amendments over time, resulting in a zoning code that can be difficult to understand. ReCode Cherokee aims to create a modern, easy-to-use development code that simplifies regulations, improves transparency, and supports responsible growth across Cherokee County.
ReCode Cherokee is guided by the following principles:
• Integration of regulations to improve the effectiveness of the Zoning Ordinance, Design Guidelines, and Development Standards
• Creation of a user-friendly format with simple text and graphics used wherever possible to improve clarity
• Removal of redundancies and inconsistencies
• Updates to definitions to reflect current planning practice and usage
• Updates to the use of tables to reflect both existing and future uses
• Consistency with the Georgia General Statutes, as well as applicable federal statutes pertaining to zoning, land use, subdivision, environmental protection, permitting, administration, appeals/ variances, special uses, and enforcement.
Most importantly, ReCode Cherokee includes a robust public and community engagement process to better understand community priorities. Click “Get Involved” to learn about ways to stay involved with the process.
