INTERNS
The Cherokee County District Attorney’s Office offers several unpaid internship opportunities for law school and undergraduate students. These internships are available during the fall, spring, and summer semesters.
Through internships, students gain valuable experience related to the criminal justice system and local law enforcement. Students work with the assistant district attorneys and other staff members as they process, investigate, and prosecute criminal cases, as well as provide support to crime victims. Note that undergraduate internships are available in Victim Services only.
GENERAL LAW INTERN (1st-2nd year law students) - all positions are filled
Designed for first- or second-year law students, this internship gives law students the opportunity to assist trial attorneys with the preparation of cases from warrant to trial. Interns are given assignments that expose them to a wide range of prosecutorial functions that include, but are not limited to, reviewing cases, assembling case evidence notebooks, researching and writing, reviewing transcripts, sorting and analyzing evidence, and observing witness interview and court proceedings.
Applicants who meet the program requirements and pass a background check will be contacted for an interview.
GENERAL LAW INTERN (3rd year law students) - all positions are filled
Law students who satisfy the requirements under the Third Year Practice Act receive hands-on experience in all prosecutorial functions described for first- and second-year interns. In addition, the third-year year law student, under the direct supervision of an assistant district attorney, will handle matters before court, such as pleas, probation revocations, motion hearings, probable cause hearings, and trial assistance.
Applicants who meet the program requirements and pass a background check will be contacted for an interview.
SPECIAL VICTIMS UNIT (law students) - all positions are filled
Law students with an interest in handling the prosecution of crimes against children, the elderly, and other vulnerable populations benefit from an internship with the Special Victims Unit. Typical cases handled by this unit include child molestation, exploitation of children, and elder abuse. Interns receive similar assignments as the general law intern program, but with specialized exposure to prosecution strategies in the area of the Special Victims Unit.
Applicants who meet the program requirements and pass a background check will be contacted for an interview.
DOMESTIC VIOLENCE UNIT (law students) - all positions are filled
The Domestic Violence Unit offers interns an opportunity to work with cases involving violence between intimate partners or family members. Typical cases include physical violence, strangulation, sexual assault, property damage, and stalking. Interns receive similar assignments as the general law internship, with a specialized exposure to the prosecution strategies involved in domestic violence and sexual assault.
Applicants who meet the program requirements and pass a background check will be contacted for an interview.
VICTIM SERVICES (undergraduate students) - All Positions Filled for Spring 2024
The Victim Witness Assistance Program provides support services to people who suffer as a result of a criminal act. Staff members work in the community to advocate for victim’s rights, interests, and endeavors.
Responsibilities of Victim Witness interns include contacting victims or witnesses to notify them of upcoming court dates for the offender or to update on the case status, assisting in obtaining restitution for victims, observing victim/witness interviews and court proceedings, and assisting advocates in processing and tracking caseloads.
Applicants who meet the program requirements and pass a background check will be contacted for an interview.
